Evolving Excellence: The Journey
of IET Young Professionals Sri Lanka

Since its establishment on 01st September 1997 as the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) Young Members Section Sri Lanka, which was the second younger members section outside the UK, the organization has undergone a remarkable transformation. It has evolved into the prestigious entity known today as the IET Young Professionals Sri Lanka, reflecting the 2006 formation of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) through the amalgamation of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE). This institutional transition necessitated the name change, marking a significant milestone in the organization's journey.

The founding Advisors and members of this organization, such as Prof. JR Lucas, Prof (Mrs). IJ Dayawansa and Dr. Wijayatunga lay the groundwork for the development of a community of future engineers. Since our modest beginnings, our journey has been distinguished by important turning points and noteworthy projects.

IEE YMS in Sri Lanka was established on 23rd August 1997. The term of the first committee (1997/1998) began on 1st September 1997. We had members representing the industry, University of Moratuwa (UOM) staff, University of Peradeniya (UOP) staff, and final-year students of UOM. The first chairman was Mr. Dilan Walgampaya, who was in his final year at the time.

An important turning point in our history was the creation of the Younger Members Sections (YMS) which opened the door for younger professionals to actively participate in the network's activities. The YMS exemplified the spirit of innovation and teamwork as one of the earliest international youth groups inside the IEE.

In recent times, the IET Young Professionals Sri Lanka has continued its legacy of excellence, empowering the next generation of engineers and innovators. The organization's dedication is exemplified through initiatives such as student scholarships and mentorship programs, aimed at nurturing talent and fostering professional growth.

The 2021 IET Volunteer Core Value Award was a further testimonial to our unwavering dedication to honesty, excellence, and teamwork, and it further highlighted our commitment to excellence. This recognition is a testament to our combined efforts in pushing engineering and technology forward.

Our primary goal is to empower young professionals, which is demonstrated by programmers like the IET Young Woman Engineer Award. By honoring vibrant people who personify the best values of the engineering profession, we hope to uplift the next generation and promote an excellence-focused culture.

As we move forward, the IET Young Professionals Sri Lanka won't waver in its dedication to innovation, teamwork, and excellence. We stay focused on bringing about positive change and led by our basic beliefs as we traverse the constantly changing field of engineering and technology.

Furthermore, the IET Young Professionals Sri Lanka has served as a pivotal platform for young professionals to articulate their concerns and champion the interests of future engineers. The current executive team, comprising Eng. Nimantha Madushan as Chair, Eng. Thathsara Nanayakkara as Vice Chair, Eng. Shankarnath Suthakaran as Honorary Secretary, and Eng. Madura Fernando as Treasurer, epitomizes the network's commitment to leadership and excellence.

Under their guidance, the IET YP Sri Lanka has not only distinguished itself within the IET Sri Lanka Network but has also assumed significant roles on both regional and international fronts.

This collaborative leadership approach underscores the network's commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity, innovation, and excellence, propelling the IET Young Professionals Sri Lanka to new heights on the international stage.

In conclusion, the journey of the IET Young Professionals Sri Lanka is a testament to the power of vision, dedication, and collaboration. As we celebrate our past achievements and look forward to a future filled with promise, we remain committed to shaping the future of engineering and inspiring generations to come.
